This playful and expressive Kokeshi set was created by Sato Kōson (佐藤幸尊), one of the rare female voices within the sōsaku Kokeshi tradition. Her work is defined by graphic brushwork and a subtle focus on interaction and emotion.
The set originates from the Gunma region (群馬県), where Shōfuku Kokeshi are known for their warm, approachable character and strong artisanal roots.
What makes this set particularly special is the interplay between the two figures. Thanks to the separate construction of head and body, you can position them freely, allowing their gaze and posture to shift — playful, calm, or more closely connected.
The accompanying calligraphy deepens this experience. The prominent character 福 (fuku), meaning good fortune, is paired with a poetic wish for joy, harmony, and a fulfilled life. The object therefore carries not only a visual presence, but also a symbolic meaning.
The combination of bold calligraphy and soft, rounded forms gives the duo a distinctive lightness without losing character. It is precisely this balance that makes Kōson's work both accessible and highly collectible.
This set is offered as a complete ensemble, including:
- original box (tomobako)
- wooden base
- nameplate
- accompanying documentation
A rare and complete set that is both visually and conceptually compelling.
