Yoshio Ōtani – Elegance and refined brushwork
Yoshio Ōtani (大谷良雄, 1925–2012) was a Japanese kokeshi-shi from Miyagi Prefecture, known for his Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi distinguished by refined forms and graceful, restrained decoration.
Active from the 1950s onward, he developed a style centered on harmony, softness, and technical precision. His work belongs to the more understated current within the creative Kokeshi movement, where form and brushwork take precedence over overt expression.
He received a Prime Minister's Award for his craftsmanship in Kokeshi art, an acknowledgment of his standing within the Sōsaku tradition.
