Caring for Your Kokeshi
Kokeshi dolls are handcrafted with care, and they deserve a gentle touch.
Especially for vintage pieces, a little attention will help preserve their charm for many years to come.
1. Cleaning and dusting
Dust only with a soft, dry cloth or brush.
Never use water or cleaning products: moisture can damage the wood and paint.
For delicate details, a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush works perfectly.
2. Placement and storage
Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause fading or tiny cracks in the wood.
Keep your Kokeshi away from high humidity and sudden temperature changes (avoid radiators or bathrooms).
Place them on a stable surface, away from drafts or vibrations.
3. Handling vintage Kokeshi
Handle as little as possible with bare hands: natural skin oils can affect the paint over time.
Do not use oils or wax, as they can alter the original finish.
Small imperfections and patina are part of the doll's story – that is the essence of Wabi-Sabi beauty.
4. Collector's tip
For rare or valuable pieces, take photos for insurance or inventory purposes.
A display cabinet or enclosed shelf provides extra dust protection while keeping the charm visible.
