Sanpei Yamanaka – Playful Refinement in Sōsaku Kokeshi
Sanpei Yamanaka (山中三平, 1926–2000) was a Japanese kokeshi-shi from Gunma Prefecture, respected within the Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi movement. He began his artistic career in the 1950s and developed a distinctive, playful style that blends traditional forms with colorful, contemporary decoration.
His work is characterized by an approachable aesthetic and a warm presence, with balance and harmony consistently at its core. Yamanaka successfully combined expressiveness with refinement, creating Kokeshi that convey both lightness and craftsmanship.
He received multiple national awards, including a Prime Minister's Award, in recognition of his contribution to the creative evolution of Kokeshi art.
