Usaburō Kokeshi – Modern Expression and Craftsmanship
Usaburō Kokeshi was founded in 1950 by Okamoto Usaburō (1917–2009) in Shinto, Gunma Prefecture, a key center of the Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi movement.
The atelier became known for its modern interpretations of Kokeshi, combining traditional wood-turning techniques with contemporary design, vivid colors, and approachable, friendly expressions. Usaburō Kokeshi has played an important role in making creative Kokeshi accessible to a wider audience while maintaining a strong sense of craftsmanship.
