Shidō Shōzan – Artistic Innovator in Sōsaku Kokeshi
Shidō Shōzan (志田昭山, 1932–1995) was a Japanese kokeshi-shi from Miyagi Prefecture, respected within the Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi movement for his powerful forms and refined brushwork.
His work forms a bridge between traditional woodturning and modern artistic expression. Shidō Shōzan explored form and surface with a restrained yet expressive approach, resulting in Kokeshi that feel both grounded in tradition and distinctly contemporary.
He received multiple awards for his work, including a Prime Minister's Award, recognizing his contribution to the development of creative Kokeshi.
